Building for the Future

In 2015 the UK Government set an ambitious target to create 3 million apprenticeships by 2020.  The Apprenticeship levy was introduced in 2017 to drive up numbers.

Unfortunately, the UK government fell short of its target of 3 million apprenticeships but the number of apprenticeships in the UK has significantly increased.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the business landscape has significantly changed and apprentices will play a vital and big role in shaping the future business environment.

The Future is Bright

Today the landscape has changed with apprenticeships offered in a variety of industries such as healthcare, legal and finance.  Apprentices play a key part in shaping the future business landscape and developing UK innovation and technology, particularly in the aerospace, defence, security and space sectors.

Once you’ve chosen which industry you would like to make a difference in, it is a good idea to check what level of apprenticeship is offered and what will suit you.

Are apprenticeships right for my employer?

Brexit, Covid-19 and digital disruption have impacted the ways employers operate but apprenticeships are still and will remain important.  Apprenticeships allow for employers to develop flexible training options, ensuring that apprentices are developing the right skills to contribute towards employer growth and competitive advantage.

If you are interested in becoming an apprentice, there are funds made available to your employer for investing in your future development.

Is an apprenticeship right for me?

The question which is always asked! Anyone over the age of 16 who spends 50 per cent of their working time in England will be eligible for an apprenticeship, providing they don’t already hold a similar qualification.

You are never too old

Apprenticeships allow employers to recruit and develop highly skilled workers and the good news is anyone over the age of 16 is eligible for an apprenticeship.  The oldest apprentice I have worked with is 55 years old – it’s never too late and you’re never too old!

How much will I get paid?

The general rule is that the employer pays you at least the minimum wage but what is advised is that the employer pays you based on your role and level of responsibility.

In the aerospace, defence, security and space sectors apprentices have access to highly skilled roles and often highly paid job reflecting the importance of their work.

20 per cent of your working time will be spent on developing skills and behaviours relevant to your industry and you get to work alongside experienced individuals.  In addition to receiving time off to study towards a professional qualification, you are developing practical experience which is vital for your development and future.
