Tera Allas, a strategic advisor at the Department for Business, has tweeted a chart that looks at absolute R&D spend (as opposed to R&D as a % of GDP) in the UK and some key competitor countries.
So what it shows is that while, in absolute terms we’re pretty far up the list, others spend significantly more than us.
It raises significant questions about how the UK is going to win the PM’s ‘Global Race’ or to generate a high-tech export-led recovery when looking at o:
- France – 30% more than the UK
- South Korea – 50% more,
- Germany – 133% more,
- Japan – 250% more,
- China – 420% more, and
- US – almost 1000% more!
