10 Years

This week we are celebrating the UK’s Security and Resilience Industry Suppliers Community (RISC) tenth anniversary.

Established on 29 March 2007 in partnership with the Home Office, RISC is an inclusive alliance of trade associations and bodies which represent the UK’s security and resilience sector – collectively representing well over 7,500 British security and resilience companies, and over 65,000 additional individuals.

Purpose

The purpose of RISC is to act as an umbrella association in order reduce the fragmented way in which the Government engages with the security and resilience sector, and to work with Government through the Home Office (Office for Security and Counter Terrorism) and other departments and agencies, on national security and resilience issues to:

  1. Help ensure the efficient and timely delivery of quality national security capabilities to Government in support of the National Security Strategy and Strategic Defence and Security Review, as well as relevant sub-strategies such as CONTEST;
  2. Work with the Government to increase the UK’s share of the global security export market and deliver CONTEST through private sector activities abroad;
  3. Where appropriate, use the private sector to delivery capacity building projects in high risk countries, achieving UK national security objectives abroad.

Although RISC’s primary point of interaction with Government is the Home Office, RISC has supported both the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and Department for Transport (DfT) on capacity building projects, and worked with the Department for International Trade (at that time UKTI) to develop the UK’s Security Exports Strategy.

RISC is deeply involved in the governance of the Security and Resilience Growth Partnership (SRGP) and the Joint Security and Resilience Centre (JSaRC).

Membership

RISC was founded by the three original Founding Partners:

Since its establishment, RISC has expanded beyond the Founding Partners to include other Members, including capability-specific groupings, smaller regional associations, and skills bodies. To date, these are:

In addition, RISC has academic and innovation links through Academic RiSC, the Partnership for Conflict, Crime & Security Research (PaCCS), and Innovate UK’s Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN).

All members of the associations and bodies that comprise the RISC membership have automatic access to opportunities through RISC. RISC Membership remains open to other appropriate, representative bodies.

After 10 years of success, RISC continues to go from strength to strength, working hand-in-hand with Government to find better ways to cooperate on security and resilience issues.
