Yesterday, the UK sent its first ever astronaut, Tim Peake, to the International Space Station – now, ADS Group is giving students the chance to enter a national competition to design and build their own rocket. The winners of the UK Final competition will go on to compete in an International Final against the US and France.
Designed to encourage teamwork, creativity and innovation, the Rocketry Competition is open to all students aged 11-18 and will test their science, maths and engineering skills.
The Rocketry Challenge involves teams of up to ten creating a rocket. Finished rockets should not be less than 65 centimetres in length; motor-powered using approved motors, and capable of taking off and landing with two raw eggs on board that must remain intact with a target time of 44 and 46 seconds. The winning rocket will be the one that reaches the target altitude of 850 feet for qualification flights.
Organised by UK trade organisation for space and aerospace industries, ADS Group, the competition is now in its tenth year.
Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of ADS Group said: “The UK space and aerospace industries are world leaders and there are great career opportunities for young people with strong maths and science qualifications.
“We hope the inspiration of the first ever UK astronaut being sent to the International Space Station will inspire the next generation of budding engineers. The Challenge gives them practical experience of building and executing complex missions and is an exciting way to learn more about maths and science.”
Students who enter the initial round of competition will compete in a Regional Final. Winning teams from each region will go through to the UK Final.
The national winning team will then go on to face the winning teams from the US and France at the Farnborough International Airshow 2016.
There is no limit in the number of teams a school or college can enter and while the maximum size of a team is ten, teams of four to five members is recommended.
