  • Record number of orders for widebody aircraft
  • Nearly 50 per cent more orders for widebody aircraft compared with 2014
  • Engine orders up by nearly a quarter on 2014 levels

Figures released today by aerospace trade body ADS Group show that the first five months of 2015 has seen strong demand for widebody aircraft, with year-to-date orders up by nearly 50 per cent on last year. This record number of orders will be worth up to £6bn to UK business.

Deliveries rates for widebody aircraft have increased by 20 per cent on 2014 levels, equating to around £9bn in value. Engine orders for the aircraft have also risen and are up by more than a quarter on 2014 levels.

These figures are the first to be released by ADS since last month’s Paris International Airshow which saw £87bn in aircraft orders which means around £11bn worth of work for UK businesses.

Deals announced at Paris included orders for more than 430 A320neos, which could be worth up to £4bn to the UK’s Aerospace industry. Boeing also announced a major order for the freighter version of the 747-8 ‘Jumbo Jet’, with UK companies contributing parts ranging from passenger windows, galleys and flight deck interiors.

One of the most significant orders for UK industry, came from Ethiopian Airlines who confirmed the purchase of six Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. The deal could be worth up to £250m to UK industry with British companies making up about 25 per cent of Rolls-Royce powered 787s’ value; this includes Rolls-Royce Trent engines, business class seating, landing gear, and fuel pumps and valves.
