London headquartered safety equipment manufacturer and supplier Survitec will introduce two new protective suits for chemical, biological and radioactive environments at IDEX, which takes place in Abu Dhabi from 17 – 21 February.

The DEMRON ICE suit incorporates patented nanotechnology to protect against low-level gamma radiation. Studies carried out by Lawrence Livermore National Defence Laboratory show that the suit provides at least 50% shielding of gamma rays of up to 130Kev.

Manufactured from liquid metal particles the DEMRON fabric has a high thermal conductivity and cools the wearer down on the inside of the garment as heat transfers through the fabric.

Paul Parry, Group CBRN Business Manager, Survitec, said: “This suit will revolutionise the way CBR (chemical, biological and radiological) suits can be worn. Not only will it keep the first responder cool, but it will also protect against low-level gamma radiation.

“Many standard CBR suits on the market offer radiological protection against radioactive particulates created by an explosion, as these particles can dusted off. However, unlike the DEMRON ICE suit, they do not protect against low level gamma radiation.”

The second suit being showcased by Survitec for the first time is the NormMb suit. Combining carbon and membrane technologies, the hybrid suit has been designed for use in chemical/biological scenarios and protects against traditional warfare agents, such as mustard gas. One of the benefits of the hybrid system is that liquid threats are defeated in accordance with NATO standards.

Parry said: “The NormMb suit has a waterproof and liquid agent protective layer. This stops the suit being affected by water or excessive perspiration. It brings together carbon and membrane technologies to create a unique performance characteristic.”

Designed for land-forces, the suit uses a material that contains filters equipped with spherical activated carbon, as well as air, water and gas treatment filters. It is highly air permeable and adsorbent, washable and resistant to seawater.

Survitec will also be showcasing the Desert Warrior load carriage system designed in collaboration with the UAE Joint Air Command as well as a range of Pre-Hospital Care Systems including waterproof modules, Military Inflatable Boats, Load Carriage Systems and a range of Maritime Defence Survival Suits and Life Preservers. Additionally, Survitec will launch the brand new AX3 Aircrew Adaptable Armour System.

Running simultaneously alongside IDEX is the Naval Defence and Maritime Exhibition and Conference (NAVDEX) taking place on the docks outside the exhibition centre. Survitec will showcase a full maritime defence demonstration twice daily in which a crew donned in full Survitec maritime defence equipment will conduct a mission to save an injured pilot on shore. The demonstration will make use of Survitec Military Inflatable Boats, maritime defence range and waterproof Pre-Hospital Care modules. All delegates are invited to view the demonstration.

Asia Pacific

Last month Survitec opened a new service and distribution hub in Singapore to meet increased demand from customers across the Asia Pacific region.

The extensive complex in Singapore’s Sembawang district (Senoko area) covers a 7,153m2 area, of which 1308m2 is outdoors. With more than 200 personnel, it is Survitec’s largest service and distribution centre globally, housing three distinct business units: WH Brennan & Co Pte Ltd, Survitec Safety Solutions Pte Ltd and Survitec Fire Solutions Pte Ltd.

Speaking during the facility’s official opening on the 9th January, Survitec CEO James Drummond said: “We are delighted to cut ribbon on this state-of-the art facility and welcome our distinguished guests to explore the site.

“The product and service diversity of the Singapore facility is unique to Survitec. The investment into this site will ensure continuous growth for Survitec S.E. Asia, capitalising on the strategic location of Singapore as a major regional maritime, cruise and aviation hub in one of the world’s most dynamic regions.”

Many of Singapore’s leading maritime industry figures attended the opening, including senior executives from the Royal Navy and UK MoD, governmental officials, shipowners, ship management companies, shipyards, and suppliers.( senior officers and executives from the Royal Navy, government agencies, shipowners, ship management companies, shipyards, Survitec regional distributors and 3rd party stations and suppliers)

Danny Lien, President of the Singapore Association of Shipsuppliers & Services (SASS), who attended the event, said: “I extend my heartiest congratulations to Survitec on the opening of its new facilities in Singapore. The well-equipped facilities complemented by professionally trained staff will certainly move the Port of Singapore up the value chain. I am confident that Survitec will continue to be a valuable contributor to Singapore’s maritime services ecosystem.”

Joseph Choo, Managing Director, Survitec SEA, said: “This great site, perhaps the largest in Survitec for service and distribution, allows us to merge the sales and operations of the three entities as one Survitec. This allows us to offer greater services to our customers, locally, regionally and globally.”

The Survitec products and services supplied by the Singapore facility include, rental life rafts, fire-fighting equipment, safety, rescue and evacuation systems, and marine electronics equipment, such as EPIRBS. The markets Survitec Singapore services includes the region’s maritime, defence and aviation sectors.

Survitec’s Southeast Asia business has grown exponentially over the last 10 years and today the company operates branches in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Korea, serving more than 5,000 customers across the region. (to delete as Hong Kong, Shanghai and Korea are no longer branches of Singapore since 2018)

“Over the last 10 years, we have been very focused on growing our business, serving our existing customer base to the best possible standards and winning new customers in new market segments. The new Sembawang (Senoko) facility is indicative of that success and in maintaining growth to deliver rigorous new product development and servicing programmes,” added Choo (Joseph).
