EM requires a monitored person to wear a tag which uses Global Positioning System (GPS), Radio Frequency (RF), or Remote Alcohol Monitoring (RAM) technology, and communicates any alerts or movements back to a central monitoring centre.

The technology provided by G4S will enable curfew monitoring at fixed locations for defined periods and continuous tracking using GPS products.

Angela Smith, G4S Service Director, said: "G4S will also operate the monitoring centre using its own software, and provide the field services required to install, decommission and support the technology in use across the country.

"This contract will allow us to build upon our work from the past seven years with the Scottish Government, through a high quality service that supports public protection and safer communities across the country."

David Byrne, Managing Director of G4S Monitoring Technologies and Services, said: "This key win reinforces our position as a global market leader in electronic monitoring. Our continued work with the Scottish Government will allow us to introduce our latest developments in technology which will further enhance capabilities available to criminal justice agencies in Scotland.
