Dyer & Butler wins London City Airport redevelopment contract
Dyer & Butler has won a major contract to deliver enabling and drainage works secured as part of the planned development programme at London City Airport.
The development programme will create the required space and infrastructure for an anticipated increase to over 100,000 annual scheduled aircraft movements and six million passenger journeys.
The new land, which is being constructed by extending the airport’s existing concrete deck over part of the King George V Dock, will provide the room for a parallel taxiway, aircraft stands, and a terminal extension including a three-storey passenger pier.
The contract entails the construction of a new airfield drainage and attenuation scheme to ensure adequate surface water removal. Dyer & Butler will install a network of storm water and surface water drainage services that will link to a new attenuation tank, oil separator tank and pump station, enabling water to be discharged through a 400mm HDPE pumped main into the dock.
Dyer & Butler will also undertake the full-depth construction of new paved taxiway links and concrete fillets that connect to the existing airport taxiways.
In addition, Dyer and Butler Electrical has won an important mechanical and electrical (M&E), which will see it construct the electrical Stand Services. The programme for this work will run concurrently with the extension of the concrete decking.
Part of a wider development programme, the works will facilitate the airport’s anticipated increase to over 100,000 annual scheduled aircraft movements and the accompanying six million passenger journeys.
The initial part of the project requires Dyer & Butler Electrical to reconfigure four of the existing aircraft stands, including the installation of new, low-voltage, fixed ground power and facilities for ground power support equipment. Once the new taxiway has been constructed, Dyer & Butler Electrical will provide the low voltage, fixed ground power and ground power support equipment chargers for a further eight stands.
Dyer & Butler Electrical will also install yellow pedestrian barriers and protection barriers to the south side of the taxiway. During the same period, briefing shelters will be installed to give protection to those working outside; while low-voltage LED lighting will be installed where possible across the project in order to help London City Airport achieve its environmental objectives. All of the LED lighting will be fully compliant with the UK Civil Aviation Authorities’ standard CAP 168 for lighting levels using LEDs.

The M&E part of the major contract award will run through to the end of September 2021.
Work on the redevelopment projects across London City Airport are already underway and are planned to run for three years.
