Cranfield recognised for its sustained excellence in transport systems
Cranfield University is to receive the prized Award of Merit from the Worshipful Company of Carmen for its sustained excellence in transport systems, logistics and supply chain research and education. The 500-year-old Livery Company brought order to the streets of the City of London and shaped the world of transport. Each year, the Worshipful Company of Carmen’s Awards banquet recognises outstanding contributions to different aspects of the transport industry.
The coveted award recognises outstanding achievement in the UK or overseas in the sphere of transport by an individual or team.
Melvyn Peters, Director of Education at Cranfield’s School of Management, who is collecting the award at the Awards banquet on 14th March, said: “It is a real honour to be recognised with this award by The Worshipful Company of Carmen in acknowledgment of Cranfield’s research and education in transport systems, logistics and supply chain.

The MSc in Logistics & Supply Chain Management is in its 35th year and is the longest-running Master’s in the UK that focuses on logistics, transport and supply chain. During this time, Cranfield has created more than 1,000 experts across the world, some of whom are globally well-known professors, including Emeritus Professor Martin Christopher and Professor Richard Wilding OBE - founders of the Logistics Research Network.
The Worshipful Company of Carmen has served the City of London, the UK and the world, for the last 500 years. It has been especially influential in London, where it started as the organisation that brought order to the chaos of the streets. Among many innovations pioneered by the Carmen is vehicle licensing, through the Company’s famous 'cartmarking'.
Each year, the Awards banquet recognises outstanding contributions to a number of different aspects of the transport industry. This year’s recipients include Ron Dennis CBE, founder and CEO of McLaren, who will be presented with the Company’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and also, as part of the Carmen’s anniversary celebrations, the ‘Carmen Special 500th Year Award’ is to be presented to the Royal Mail for its 500 years of consistent and continuing service to the nation.
