AEUK hosts Stealth Boat challenge for local schools
Atlas Elektronik UK (AEUK) recently held a STEM day event arranged in conjunction with The Smallpeice Trust, a national education charity, involving staff and students from nine schools across the county at AEUK's Winfrith site.
By combining the STEM challenge with an introduction to AEUK’s research and development work and facilities the event allowed students to experience science and engineering at first hand.
Working closely with AEUK’s engineering graduates and apprentices, students competed in mixed teams to build a fast ultra-quiet Stealth Boat. Teamwork, science and engineering skills, leadership and innovation were the order of the day.
Testing took place in the Acoustic Test Tank, where the students were shown the UK’s largest underwater anechoic chamber. Teams saw if their designs stood up to the project brief: to be fast and undetectable.
The winning boat suitably named 'Queen All Saints I' was made by a team comprising Queen Elizabeth School from Wimborne and All Saints School from Weymouth. Students from the winning team won a place on a four day ‘Marine Technology’ residential course at the University of Portsmouth organised by The Smallpeice Trust. A further 9 places were awarded to a deserving student from each of the participating schools.
