Join us at this FREE TO ATTEND event for a short presentation by Adam Healy, Principal, and Miguel Lopez, Senior Consultant, from Roland Berger, to launch their new "Defence Zero" report, followed by a discussion with a panel including Dr. Sam Healy (Group Director, QinetiQ), Debbie Allen (Group Director Climate, Environment & Infrastructure, BAE Systems), Harry Malins (Chief Innovation Officer, Aerospace Technology Institute) and Dr. Alexandra Howe (Deputy Director Levelling Up, The Union, Climate Change and Sustainability, Ministry of Defence).
The defence sector accounts for ~1-2% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a footprint broadly comparable with that of civil aviation and maritime transport, as outlined in “Defence Zero”, a new report by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. Of these emissions, the vast majority comes from operational activities (e.g. missions, training) and only a fraction from production of military platforms in the supply chain. The industry has an ever-expanding set of options through which it could reduce its emissions, but many come with trade-offs and broader implications. The impacts of sustainability on defence must be understood, and priorities must be set.
Topics
- Defining the problem: sustainability and emissions in Defence – the source and magnitude of the challenge
- State of play: potential solutions to the challenge, current examples and progress
- What is the cost: trade-offs and geopolitical implications – can sustainability go hand in hand with national security?
- Where to from here: what should MODs and industry focus on for the next 5-10 years and what role should (broader) governments play?
