Millie Hall first joined GKN Aerospace in 2018 as a Level 2 Business Administrator Apprentice. Millie now has a permanent position supporting to VP’s at GKN Aerospace’s Bristol Global Technology Centre.
What made you want to pursue a career in the sector and an apprenticeship?
I first started looking at apprenticeships when I was 18 after completing college and not finding my passion in the beauty industry which I had qualified in.
After researching apprenticeships I knew that it would be ideal for me to work in this sector, as I could learn on the job whilst gaining a qualification; it also gave me the confidence to work in this type of environment.
I joined GKN Aerospace in 2018 as a level 2 Business Administrator Apprentice. After completing my apprenticeship I knew I didn’t want to stop learning so continued with a level 3 apprenticeship which I qualified with a distinction. Within that role I supported the Filton senior leadership team. I have now moved on to a permanent position supporting two VPs at GKN Aerospace’s Bristol Global Technology Centre.
What is your day-to-day role like?
My day-to-day role ranges from admin tasks such as supporting meetings, diary management and booking travel, to arranging major celebration events, VIP visits and communication sessions. Every day is different which makes my job very interesting. I have worked on many projects that have taught me new skills and I have been able to learn from others.
Have you worked on any interesting projects / programs during your apprenticeship?
One task that I enjoyed very much was giving every employee at our neighbouring Filton site the opportunity to visit our Global Technology Centre to see current new projects. I believe that it is important that employees know what new exciting projects are being worked on within the company. Arranging for around 500 employees to visit did take some organising but it was well worth it!
What has been the best thing about your apprenticeship, has anything surprised you?
The best thing about my apprenticeship has been learning and gaining confidence. I now can complete tasks that I never thought I would be able to do.
I was very surprised when GKN Aerospace presented me with the UK Apprentice of the Year Award (2020 – 2021). This was a real achievement in my career.
Would you recommend an apprenticeship?
I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship to anyone looking to start a career. It has helped me in so many ways being around knowledgeable colleagues who are supportive; who take the time to teach you new skills and who want you to succeed.
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?
One piece of advice I would give is to take every opportunity you get and ask to help on projects you are interested in. You might help on projects that are completely different to your current role and this will open up different paths for future opportunities.
