ADS would like to gauge levels of interest in joining the United Kingdom Pavilion at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) Exhibition, Malaysia’s primary event for Maritime and Aerospace capabilities, across both civil and defence sectors with a strong presence of other Indo-Pacific nations. Strategically, Indonesia seeks to simplify its future force to focus on Western and indigenous technologies placing UK industry in an advantageous position, with Indonesia having a long history of industrial partnership with European states, with several examples of major procurement successes for UK firms in the nation.
Market Intelligence
Indonesia has a large fleet of mostly low-tonnage vessels, with a stated minimum hull number of 151 vessels, with a target of 274. The force is currently undergoing significant modernisation, with surge of ship deliveries in the early 2020s to start refreshing an aging fleet. A key part of the modernisation effort rests in derivatives of the UK designed Type 31 frigate, as well as the delivery of several classes of both European and domestically produced Corvettes and OPVs, many of which are currently in the fitting out stage. Indonesia also has a long list of Corvettes in service which over 40 are nearing MLU age. It has been identified that such modernisation efforts have struggled from a shortage of industrial experience, opening further opportunities for UK support.
For air capability, the Indonesian MoD has in recent years similarly pivoted towards procurement of western systems and now has reached a majority of US and European airframes, leaving opportunity for UK firms in MRO, upgrade and munitions, particularly air-ground and anti-shipping. UAS systems are likely to be a future procurement, especially relating to the maritime domain.
